What started as a simple backyard renewal to a returning client’s Victorian Terrace evolved into a timber artist’s pavilion instated among a lushly planted haven.

The narrow and sloping site linearises the experience of the backyard, traversing from a flush finish top deck, down to a lowered paving area and a wall-to-wall wide floating timber pavilion, a retreat for moments of contemplation and gazing of the garden.

Inspired by our artist-client, the pavilion depicts a life size picture frame, viewed from either end or within, and is expressed through the illusion of a floating blonde timber frame, with storage for surfboards and outdoor recreation equipment clad in shou sugi ban receding in the background. Carefully placed ornamental trees were incorporated into the design and to an outdoor banquette / planter, to compliment the experience of a garden with different functional zones; eating and entertaining in the deck and barbeque area, relaxing in the spa / pool or lounging in the lower paved level, and in the pavilion, exercise in moving, or gazing, at or within the picture frame, whether the activity is painting or an outdoor cinema night.

Upstairs, a renovation to the family bathroom was also treated with an immersive lens. The use of two natural stones, wrapping floor to ceiling, and to the stone-faced drawer vanity creates an room of marble veins, intricate lines and swirls in softly subdued tones, and an ambient skylight over the shower.

Demolition began in early February and completion is expected late 2025.
